No Google Drive for Univ. Research Policy

The University of Connecticut has a strict policy against the use of Google Drive for storage/automatic backup of any documents pertaining to research conducted under the university. Research documents should be stored either in a staff or faculty person’s P drive / Onedrive, or in a department’s Q or R (research) drive. This policy is in place for a number of reasons, however it is primarily due to Export Control Laws- specifically, those which regulate how information is transmitted to foreign soil or persons. The manner in which Google handles data does not ensure compliance with said laws. More information on Export Control Laws can be found here. This policy also ensures direct access to documents through VPN clients, and helps maintain version control and data recovery.
